Bruth Hunt 와 동료인 Dr Byrams 가 검사실로 잡혀갔을 때 이야기

경찰이 시내의 검사실로 우리를 데리고 갔다.
다음 명령이 떨어지기를 서서 기다리고 있는 중에 보니 두 사람의 한국 기독교인들이 건물 안으로 들어오고 있었다.
한 명은 Dr Byrams 의 의무실에서 일하는 수간호원으로 경찰에게 이끌려와서 우리와 함께 세워졌다.
또 다른 한 명은 소박한 차림의 여인이었는데 우리가 알기로는 5명의 아이를 두어서 매우 분주한 엄마로 알고 있는데 스스로 이 곳으로 들어온 것이다.
그 아주머니는 며칠 전에 한 무리의 다른 기독교인들과 함께 잡혔었다.
하루종일 막내 아이와 함께 구치소에 수감되어 있었고 게다가 만삭의 몸이어서 언제 해산할 지 모르는 상황이었다.
우리에게 와서 말하기를 경찰의 협박에다가 믿지 않는 남편이 노발대발하고 또 자신의 아이들이 우는 바람에 결국은 신사참배 하겠다는 동의서에 사인을 해서 제출했었다고 한다.
그런데 이 자리에 다시 돌아온 것이다.
그녀가 조용히 "그 사인을 철회하려고 돌아왔어요." 라고 하는 말을 들으면서 나의 맥박은 빨라졌다.
"장신애" 아주머니의 일상 평온한 얼굴은 흥분으로 상기되어 있었으며 덧붙이기를 "사는 것만도 못해요."
검사는 코웃음을 쳤지만 그 아주머니를 때리지는 않았다.
일본 경찰들이 그보더 훨씬 더 조그마한 일에도 화를 내고 사람들을 때리는 것을 보아왔었는데 말이다.
"가시오." 그가 말했다. "아기를 낳으시오, 그리고 우리가 당신을 지켜볼 거요."
우리는 그 여자분이 신에게 붙들림으로, 몸 뿐만 아니라 양심까지 자유로워진 모습으로 방을 나가는 것을 지켜보았다.
그것이 우리가 이제 곧 각자 만나게 될 시험에 얼마나 격려와 도전이 되었는지!!

The police took us downtown to the prosecutor’s office. As we stood waiting for further orders, two of our Korean Christians came into the building, One, the head nurse in Dr. Byram’s dispensary, was led in by the police and made to stand with us. The other, a plain-looking woman, whom we knew as the busy mother of five children, came in by herself. She had been arrested a few days before with a number of other Christians. She had been kept in prison all day with her youngest child, even though she was pregnant and expected her newest child at any time. Afterward she had come to tell us that, under police threats, the berating of her non-Christian husband, and her children’s crying, she had finally given in and signed a statement saying that it was permissible to participate in shrine-worship. Now here she was, back again, and my pulse quickened as I heard her say quietly, “I’ve come to retract my signature.” Chang Sin Ai’s usually serene face was flushed with excitement as she added, “Sa nun gut man do mot hay yo.” (It’s not as good as living to have signed such a thing.)
The officer snorted, but he did not strike her--as I had seen the Japanese police do on much smaller provocation.
“Go.” he said, “Have your baby and then we will see to you!”
So we watched Sin Ai leave the room, kept by God, free in conscience as well as body. What an encouragement and challenge it was to us, so soon to meet our own time of testing!
