1.Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:
2."Would a wise man answer with empty notions
or fill his belly with the hot east wind?
3.Would he argue with usless words,
with speeches that have no value?
4.But you even undermine piety
and hinder devotion to God.
5.Your sin prompts your mouth;
you adopt the tongue of the crafty.
6.Your own mouth condenms you, not mine;
your own lips testify against you.
7."Are you the first man ever born?
Were you brought forth before the hills?
8.Do you listen in on God's council?
Do you limit wisdom to yourself?
9.What do you know that we do not know?
What insights do you have that we do not have?
10.The grey-haired and the aged are on our side,
men even older than your father.
11.Are God's consolations not enough for you,
words spoken gently to you?
12.Why has your heart carried you away,
and why do your eyes flash,
13.so that you vent your rage against God
and pour out such words from your mouth?
14."What is man, that he could be pure,
or oem born of woman, that he could be righteous?
15.If God places no trust in his holy ones,
if even the heavens are not pure in his eyes,
16.how much less man, who is vile and corrupt,
who drinks up evil like water!
17."Listen to me and I will explain to you;
let me tell you what I have seen,
18.what wise men have declared,
hiding nothing received from their fathers
19.(to whom alone the land was given
when no one alien passed among them):
20.All his days the wicked man suffers torment,
the ruthless through all the years stored up for him.
21.Territying sounds fill his ears;
when all seems well, marauders attack him.
22.He despairs of escaping the darkness;
he is marked for the sword.
23.He wanders about- food for vultures;
he knows the day of darkness is at hand.
24.Distress and anguish fill him with terror;
they overwhelm him, like a king poised to attack,
25.because he shakes his first at God
and vaunts himself against the Almighty,
26.defiantly charging against him
with a thick, strong shield.
27."Though his face is covered with fat
and his waist bulges with flesh,
28.he will inhabit ruined towns
and houses where no one lives,
houses crumbling to rubble.
29.He will no longer be rich and his wealth will not endure,
nor will his possessions spread over the land.
30.He will not escape the darkness;
a flame will wither his shoots,
and the breath of God's mouth will carry him away.
31.Let him not deceive himself by trusting what is worthless,
for he will get nothing in return.
32.Before his time he will be paid in full,
and his branches will not flourish.
33.He will be like a vine stripped if its unripe grapes,
like an olive tree shedding its blossoms.
34."For the company of the godless will be barren,
and fire will consume the tents of those who love bribes.
35.They conceive trouble and give birth to evil;
their womb fashions deceit."
1그러자 데만 사람 엘리바스가 아렇게 대답했습니다.
2."지혜로운 사람이 어찌하여 쓸데없는 소리나 늘어놓고,
자기 배를 허풍으로 채우는가?
3.너째서 그런 소용 없는 이야기,
유일하지 못한 말만 늘어 놓는가?
4.이재 하나님이 두렵지 않고,
그분을 경외하는 마음도 없어졌는가?
5.자네 죄가 말할 것을 입에게 일러주어
간사한 말만 하게 하는군.
6.자네를 죄인이라 말하는 것은 내가 아니라 자네 입술이네.
자네 입이 그렇게 말하는군.
7.자네가 맨 처음 세상에 태어았는가?
자네가 산보다
먼저 있었다는 말은 아니겠지?
8.자네는 하나님의 회의에 참석해 본 일이 있나?
자네만 지혜롭다고 생각하나?
9.우리는 모르고 자네만 아는 것이 무엇인가?
우리가 알지 못하는 사실을 자네는 깨닫기라도 했단 말인가?
10.우리 중에는 머리가 희끗희끗한 자도 있고
자네 아버지보다 나이가 많은 자도 있다네.
11.하나님의 위로도 자네한테는 의미가 없을 테고
조용히 타일러도 소용이 없겠지.
12.진정하게나.
자네 눈은 분노로 가득하네.
13.하나님께 화까지 내니.
그런말을 해서야 되겠는가?
14.사람이 도데체 무엇이길레
깨끗할 수 있으며
여자에게서 난 사람이 어떻게 의로울 수 있겠는가?
15.보게나.
하나님께서는 자신의 천사들도
신뢰하지 않으시며,
그분이 보시기에는 하늘도 더럽다네.
16.하물며 가증하고 타락한 사람,
악한 행동을 물 마시듯 하는 사람은 어떠하겟는가?
17.내가 겪은 바를 말할 테니 들어 보게나.
18.조상들이 지혜로운 자들에게 전해 준 그 지혜를 말하겠네.
19.그 때는 이 땅에
우리 조상들만 살았지.
외국인들은 함께 살지 못했네.
20.조상들은 이렇게 말했네.
악인은 항상 괴로움을 당하고,
포악자들의 삶 속에는 숨겨진 재앙이 계속되며,
21.그 귀에는 두려움의 소리가 그치지 않고,
모든 일이 잘 되는 듯해도,
강도 떼의 습격을 당한다.
22.그는 흑암에서 풀려날 소망을 갖지 못하고,
오짖 칼을 기다릴 뿐이며,
23.'먹을 것이 어디 있나'? 하고 물으면서 이리저리 헤메고.
어둠 속에서 방황할 뿐이다.
24.환난과 고통이 그를 놀라게 하고,
공격 준비를 마친 왕의 군대처럼 그를 치고야 만다.
25.이는 그가 손을 들어 하나님께 대항하고
교만하게 굴었기 때문이다.
26.고개를 치켜 세우고
큰 방패를 들어 감히 하나님께 대항하다니,
27.비록 그들이 배부르고 부유할지라도
28.그런 자는 아무도 살지 않는 황폐한 성에,
무너질 집에 살게 될 것이며,
29.그런 자는 더 이상 부유해지지 못할 것이며
혹시 재물이 있다해도 오래가지 못하고 사라질 것이다.
30.그들은 흑암에서 벗어나지 못하고,
불꽃이 그들을 태우며, 그분의 숨결이 그가 가진 모든 것을 없애 버린다.
31.가치가 없는 것을 믿은 자들아,
스스로 속이지 마라.
아무것도 얻지 못할 것이다.
32.그는 인생의 절정기가 오기도 전에 끝이 나고,
가지가 피기도 전에 멸망하리라.
33.그는 마치 포도가 익기 전에 떨어지듯,
올리브 나무 꽃이 덧없이 떨어지듯 그렇게 되리라.
34.악한 자는 자손을 얻지 못하고,
뇌물을 좋아하는 사람의 집은 불에 타 버릴 것이다.
35.그런 자들은
남에게 해를 끼칠 생각만 하고 거짖만 만들어 낸다."
